Nestled in the picturesque hill country of Chiang Rai, northern Thailand, the Visama Mae Chan luxury tented camp offers an exclusive, community-focused holiday experience. With just 10 tents, the camp provides a serene escape, blending cultural and natural activities with high-end northern Thai culinary fare, much of it sourced from an adjacent organic farm. Twelve more tents will be added this year, enhancing the lodge’s offerings.
Each tent, set on raised platforms, varies in size from 516 to 860 square feet, including spacious verandas. The larger tents feature two bedrooms. Guests can enjoy amenities like air conditioning, espresso machines, Wi-Fi, rain showers, bathtubs, and 24-hour concierge services, ensuring a luxurious and comfortable stay.
Visama Mae Chan’s diverse activities range from pottery and painting to foraging, picnics, arts and crafts workshops, cooking classes, and engaging discussions with guest speakers. Guests can also enjoy spa and wellness experiences, plantation drives, and private trips to local heritage attractions, such as the opium museum, Doi Mae Salong, and Chiang Rai’s White Temple.
The camp’s dining options, led by Chef Suphannat “Miu” Amnuayrit, focus on local produce. The menu at Reu Doo Gaan restaurant features traditional Lanna cuisine, nutrition-rich international comfort foods, and local specialities, highlighting the fresh produce from the neighbouring farm.
The Ambalama, a fireside gathering place, is a resort highlight for storytelling and talks by authors and historians. The lodge also supports the Friends of Thai Daughters Foundation, working to prevent child trafficking by empowering girls from hill tribe communities. The foundation benefits from various resort activities, including a monthly farmers’ market and income from plantation drives.
“We aim to provide direct income, vocational training and sustainability benefits to the local community,” said Christopher Stafford, co-founder of the lodge. “Visama Lodge will also proactively involve itself in nature conservation and the promotion of local Lanna culture.”
