Rosewood Amsterdam set open in 2024 in the UNESCO World Heritage listed Canal District

Rosewood Hotels & Resorts to open first property in the Netherlands and eleventh property in Europe as latest demonstration of global expansion. Share

Rosewood Hotels & Resorts, a leader in ultra-luxury hospitality, has been appointed by CTF Amsterdam B.V. to oversee the operations of the new Rosewood Amsterdam. Slated to open its doors in 2024, this marks the group’s first foray into the Netherlands, expanding its prestigious European portfolio to eleven locations. The hotel will occupy the former Palace of Justice, a notable structure rich in architectural, historical, and societal importance, situated along the Prinsengracht, one of Amsterdam’s most picturesque canals, within the UNESCO World Heritage Amsterdam Canal District. Positioned near key attractions like the museum district, the upscale shopping area of P.C. Hoofstraat, and the trendy De Pijp neighbourhood, the hotel aims to become a premier destination for both international visitors and local residents.

The original building, constructed in 1665 and expanded in 1836 by the Dutch architect Jan de Greef, served as Amsterdam’s main courthouse for over 175 years. It is celebrated as one of the prime examples of de Greef’s architecture, which was influenced by his travels in Paris and Rome. The transformation of this historic building into a luxury hotel is being overseen by the Netherlands-based architectural firm Kentie & Partners, in collaboration with the Bureau Monumenten en Archeologie (BMA) and The City of Amsterdam, ensuring the preservation of its rich heritage and iconic status.

The hotel’s interior design is led by the renowned Dutch designer Piet Boon of Amsterdam-based Studio Piet Boon. Boon is recognized for his approach that perfectly balances functionality, aesthetics, and personalization. He plans to maintain the building’s original features and its unique Dutch characteristics while adding a modern flair that reflects the vibrant and dynamic spirit of contemporary Amsterdam.

The hotel’s principal restaurant is being designed by Amsterdam-based Studio Concrete, featuring a lively and inviting atmosphere at the centre of the building, enhanced by two courtyard areas with outdoor seating. Additionally, an intimate bar designed by London-based Sagrada, led by David D’Almada, will offer luxurious furnishings and stunning canal views.

Rosewood Amsterdam will feature 133 guestrooms and suites, many with exceptional views of the adjoining canals, serene internal courtyards, and the city’s historic townhouse rooftops. The hotel will house three restaurants, including an Indian restaurant, bars, and the Asaya Spa, which will provide ayurvedic treatments. Guests will also have access to a cutting-edge wellness and fitness centre and an indoor swimming pool. The property will also include a variety of event and meeting spaces, such as a 3,000-square-foot ballroom equipped with top-notch audiovisual technology and natural light.

The hotel’s public areas will showcase decorative elements that celebrate the essence of the building and the city, creating distinct yet cohesive environments through thoughtful colour contrasts. The lobby lounge will be a highlight, featuring a library with an array of legal tomes that double as decorative art, along with photographs and artifacts set in a stylish, comfortable seating area designed to encourage guests to relax and enjoy the space. The library will also serve as home to an Indian Business Club, promoting high-level business interactions and networking in an exclusive ambience. Additionally, all public areas will provide views of the three beautifully landscaped internal courtyards, designed by the acclaimed landscape designer Piet Oudolf, known for his projects like New York City’s High Line and The Battery, who will bring his expertise to crafting lush garden spaces and outdoor communal areas for the hotel.

“Through design, décor and service, Rosewood’s properties worldwide mirror their surroundings and the souls of the destinations, and Rosewood Amsterdam will be no different,” says Sonia Cheng, chief executive officer of Rosewood Hotel Group. “With a unique character and culture, Amsterdam is a fitting locale for which to bring Rosewood’s guiding A Sense of Place philosophy. We’re looking forward to combining the city’s quintessential charm with a modern sense of style to meet and exceed the latest standards of luxury hospitality.”

Rosewood Amsterdam is a key part of Rosewood Hotels & Resorts’ strategic expansion in Europe, joining established properties such as Hôtel de Crillon in Paris, Rosewood London, and Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco, with upcoming projects in cities like London, Madrid, Munich, Porto Cervo, Vienna, and Venice.
