Mercedes-Benz is redefining off-roading with the new G 580

The model introduces advanced electric capabilities to the iconic G-Class with a range of up to 473 km, innovative off-road features, and a luxurious interior. Share

Mercedes-Benz has embarked on an exciting new chapter with the unveiling of the fully electric Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology. Revealed just before its public debut at Auto China Beijing 2024, this model marks the first fully electric iteration of Mercedes-Benz’s legendary off-road G-Class, combining traditional ruggedness with innovative electric mobility. This electric variant upholds the G-Class’s legacy, featuring the classic ladder-frame structure, independent front suspension, and a newly designed rigid rear axle.

One of the most significant technological advancements in this model is the integration of a 116 kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery within the ladder frame, ensuring a low center of gravity and enhancing vehicle stability. This setup provides a substantial electric range of up to 473 kilometers as per WLTP standards. To safeguard this crucial component, the battery is encased in a torsion-resistant protective cover and is further shielded by advanced underbody armor made from a combination of durable materials including carbon, ensuring protection from physical impacts and environmental elements.

Powering the all-new electric G-Class are four individually controlled electric motors located near the wheels, which are ingeniously incorporated into the vehicle’s frame. These motors collectively deliver a maximum output of 432 kW and a peak torque of 1,164 Nm. This powerful configuration supports unique off-road capabilities through advanced features such as G-TURN, which allows the vehicle to rotate in place on loose surfaces; G-STEERING, which reduces the turning radius in off-road conditions; and an intelligent off-road crawl function, offering a cruise control-like feature for navigating difficult terrains.

In terms of design, the all-new electric G-Class retains the iconic G-Class aesthetics but introduces subtle modifications to signify its electric nature. These include a slightly raised bonnet, innovative A-pillar trim, and aerodynamically efficient “air curtains” at the rear wheel-arch flares, all contributing to reduced aerodynamic drag and enhanced interior acoustics. The vehicle also features a redesigned front grille, available in an optional black-panel design, which complements its electric identity.

Inside, the cabin is equipped with the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system as standard, incorporating a 12.3-inch touchscreen that provides access to a range of functions and vehicle settings. The system is designed to offer intuitive interaction and personalized user engagement. Safety is paramount in the new electric G-Class, which comes with an extensive array of advanced driver assistance systems to ensure maximum safety and comfort under various driving conditions.

The launch of the all-new G-Class introduces the exclusive Edition One model, which is available from the outset priced at EUR 192,524. This special edition model includes an expanded range of standard features along with unique design elements that distinguish it within the electric vehicle market. Highlights of the Edition One include special paint finishes, enhanced interior materials, and unique ambient lighting effects.

With a starting price of EUR 142,621 for the standard Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology, this model not only offers advanced electric performance and off-road capabilities but also represents Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to blending heritage with forward-thinking technology. This approach is in line with the company’s ambition to lead in the fields of electric mobility and vehicle software, focusing on sustainable and innovative automotive solutions.
