Introducing Melote House, Lepogo Lodges’s exclusive new retreat within Lapalala Wilderness Reserve

This exclusive-use safari lodge, designed to accommodate 16 guests, prioritizes sustainability and blends seamlessly into its natural surroundings, inspired by the local rock formations and landscape. Share

Lepogo Lodges has expanded its offering within the pristine Lapalala Wilderness Reserve in South Africa’s Limpopo Province by opening Melote House, a complement to its established Noka Camp. This new exclusive-use safari lodge accommodates up to 16 guests, establishing a luxury oasis set in a remote, naturally stunning off-grid location.

Constructed with the environmental ethos of sustainability at its heart, Melote House’s design takes inspiration from the Waterberg region’s rock formations. Built across different levels on the hillside, it optimizes the breathtaking wilderness views. The property features living roofs to reintegrate small wildlife habitats and utilizes every natural element removed during construction to ensure a seamless blend with the environment.

A collaborative effort by architects and designers including Yuji Yamazaki from YYA Architects, along with Jacobus Uys and Jessica Rogers from Black Sable Architects, and Kelly Adami from Copperleaf Studio, resulted in a tranquil retreat that harmoniously melds with the wild. Its design features rammed earth walls for thermal stability and energy efficiency, integrating the house into the landscape while maximizing views and minimizing environmental impact.

The interiors of Melote House tell a story of commitment to the Lapalala Wilderness, its diverse flora and fauna, and its history, offering elegantly serene bedroom suites alongside vibrant living areas adorned with the colours of local birdlife. The lodge showcases the work of South African artisans and artists, including artworks by Clive Walker and bespoke fabrics and embroideries by Evolution Product and the Mogalakwena community project, infusing each space with a deep connection to the land.

Melote House provides luxurious accommodations in a main house and an adjacent cottage. The main house includes the Baobab Suite, located on the highest level, featuring 120 square meters of indoor space, 100 square meters of outdoor space, and a unique sky bed deck for stargazing. This suite also has a private pool, double indoor shower, underfloor heating, an outdoor shower, a walk-in wardrobe, and a bioethanol fireplace. The second tier houses the Marula Suites, suitable for families with interconnected rooms, each boasting 100 square meters of space, including double indoor showers, baths, and outdoor showers.

The Seringa Suite, positioned on the main level, mirrors the Marula Suites’ amenities. The Cottage offers additional privacy with two ensuite bedrooms, a kitchen, a living and dining area, and a rock pool. This 250 square meter space allows guests to enjoy independent dining options.

Community spaces in Melote House include the Seringa Bar and Lounge with a library, study, main living area, dining room, bar, wine cellar, guest kitchen, and an expansive outdoor area with a 100-square-meter pool. The property also features a lookout deck, a spa offering luxurious treatments, and a fitness area. Guests can explore the wilderness via landscaped walkways or use the electric buggy service. A highlight is the lodge’s top-tier rock pool, offering a refreshing retreat with breathtaking views.

Committed to conservation, Lepogo Lodges operates as a not-for-profit, channelling all financial gains back into the reserve. It extends this commitment by offsetting the carbon footprint of every guest’s journey from home to the lodge, offering them a choice among three conservation projects to support. This approach ensures that ecotourism benefits extend to the local community and the environment, reinforcing Lepogo Lodges’ dedication to preserving the Lapalala Wilderness for future generations.
