Maserati has finally revealed its GranCabrio Folgore

Maserati unveils the GranCabrio Folgore, a powerful 750bhp all-electric convertible with a tri-motor setup and a 280-mile range, set to redefine luxury electric convertibles. Share

Maserati has unveiled the GranCabrio Folgore, an all-electric convertible that combines striking design and impressive performance. As a rare entry in the market of four-seat electric convertibles, this model sets itself apart, arriving ahead of competitors like the Bentley EXP 12 Speed 6e and Genesis X Convertible.

The GranCabrio Folgore mirrors the aesthetic of the recently announced GranCabrio Trofeo but introduces some modifications such as a slated grille and a wind deflector for rear passengers. It maintains the signature bronzed copper finish that Maserati is known for. The vehicle is powered by a tri-motor setup similar to the GranTurismo Folgore, delivering approximately 750bhp and nearly 1,000 torques to all four wheels. This power is managed despite the car’s additional weight of about 80 kilograms compared to its coupe counterpart.

The electric drive is supported by a 92.5kWh battery, promising an estimated range of 280 miles. A notable new feature for the GranCabrio Folgore is a potential sound generator, which Maserati suggests could emulate the sound of the Abarth 500, providing an authentic auditory experience both inside and outside the vehicle.

Maserati has implemented an innovative t-shaped configuration for the battery cells in the GranTurismo model. This unique layout helps to lower the vehicle’s center of gravity while ensuring that the driver’s seating position remains uncompromised. As a result, the car, its roofline, and the driver can all be positioned closer to the ground, enhancing the overall driving experience.

To compensate for the absence of a fixed roof and the inclusion of an electric folding fabric top, Maserati has reinforced the car’s chassis, particularly along the sills and rear sections. This additional strengthening is crucial to maintain the vehicle’s structural integrity. The electric folding fabric roof can be fully retracted in a mere 14 seconds, allowing for quick and easy open-top driving.

According to Davide Danesin, the GranTurismo’s chief engineer, the convertible variant places a greater emphasis on comfort compared to its hardtop counterpart. This suggests that the open-top model may offer a more relaxed and luxurious driving experience, prioritizing passenger comfort over outright performance.

While pricing for the GranCabrio Folgore has not been officially announced, it is expected to exceed the £180,000 price tag of the GranTurismo Folgore. This launch is part of Maserati’s broader strategy to transition to a fully electric lineup, with plans to introduce an all-electric version of the MC20 next year, reinforcing its commitment to innovation and luxury in the electric vehicle market.
