When one imagines the future of the hyper-GT market, visions of sleek, futuristic designs coupled with robust engines and enhanced technologies come to mind. However, few could have anticipated the seismic shift heralded by Lotus’s new Emeya—an electric grand tourer that promises to redefine the genre.

Announced with appropriate fanfare in the bustling heart of New York City, the Emeya is another addition to the stable of electric vehicles. A union of the company’s 75-year history in building sports cars with state-of-the-art electric vehicle technologies, the Emeya stands poised to become one of the world’s fastest electric GTs. How fast, you ask? Try a 0-100 km/h acceleration in under 2.8 seconds.

Lotus hasn’t just thrown electric motors into a GT shell; they have fundamentally reconsidered what a GT can be in an electric age. Active aerodynamic features such as a pioneering active front grille, rear diffuser, and rear spoiler attest to Lotus’s meticulous engineering. Combined with what Lotus dubs as ‘hyperstance,’ a low center of gravity, these features contribute to unprecedented stability and handling—a GT that doesn’t just move but glides on the road.

The Emeya comes fitted with an electronically controlled air suspension system, a revelation in adaptive driving. The car’s advanced onboard sensors scan the road 1,000 times per second, automatically adjusting the vehicle’s dynamics to offer the smoothest possible ride.

An electric vehicle’s mettle is often judged by the efficiency of its charging system. The Emeya stands tall here too, boasting advanced charging capabilities that can add 150km of range with just about five minutes of charging via a 350kW DC fast charger. This makes it a ‘fast’ choice in terms of both driving and refuelling.

In an era where sustainability is more than a buzzword, the Emeya comes conscientiously designed with advanced sustainable materials that are also sustainably sourced. This includes repurposed fibres from the fashion industry and premium materials like PVD aluminium, Alcantara, Nappa leather, and Ultrafabrics PU.

Partnering with high-end audio company KEF, Lotus ensures that every occupant will enjoy an unparalleled audio experience. The Emeya’s speaker system offers KEF’s award-winning Uni-Q speaker design and Uni-Core space-saving subwoofer enclosure, providing Dolby Atmos-enabled 3D surround sound—another first for Lotus.

The Emeya is a flagship model embodying Lotus’s vision for the future, part of a grander plan to become a global performance brand by 2028. The name ‘Emeya’ itself was chosen to embody the ambition and commitment Lotus brings to this new class of vehicle. With production expected to begin in 2024, the Emeya is a bold step into the future, and based on what we’ve seen, the future looks extraordinarily bright.
