180 East 88th Street, a striking addition to Manhattan’s Upper East Side, is an architectural statement that redefines luxury living. Developed by DDG and designed in collaboration with HTO Architect, this 50-story residential building is a testament to the fusion of traditional craftsmanship and modern design.

Upon entering 180 East 88th Street, one is immediately struck by the grandeur and attention to detail. The building’s 48 residences are a testament to precision and elegance, featuring soaring ceiling heights of up to 14’-2″ and even stretching to 28’-8″ in duplexes. These dimensions allow for the incorporation of immense 9’ tall tilt-turn windows that bathe the interiors in natural light. The windows are set within a classic handset masonry facade, a feature that speaks to the building’s pre-war aesthetic and its commitment to craftsmanship.

The facade itself is a marvel, featuring a staggering 600,000 hand-fired bricks from Danish manufacturer Petersen Tegl. These bricks, individually laid by skilled masons, create a textured facade that is both visually stunning and historically resonant. The building’s design was inspired by the masonry trends of the 1920s, recalling the era’s architectural splendour. The decision to use a hand-laid system with a herringbone pattern adds an element of uniqueness to the building, making it stand out in the historic Carnegie Hill neighbourhood.

The modern aesthetic is complemented by elliptical entry galleries, custom wainscoting, coved ceilings, and wide plank Austrian white oak flooring. The abundant natural light enhances the spaciousness, creating an airy and inviting atmosphere. Kitchens in these residences are a chef’s dream, finished with white lacquer cabinetry designed by Molteni & C Dada specifically for DDG. The honed statuario marble slab countertops and backsplash with brass inlays exude luxury, while top-of-the-line Gaggenau appliances ensure functionality. The attention to detail is further exemplified by the stone-crafted kitchen islands, Fantini fixtures in natural brass, and custom bronze kitchen hoods.

Spanning eight floors, the amenities include a temperature-controlled wine room with private lockers and a tasting table, complemented by a direct line to a dedicated sommelier at Sotheby’s Fine Wine. For the athletically inclined, there is a partial indoor soccer field and basketball court, along with a state-of-the-art fitness centre and yoga studio. Families will appreciate the interactive children’s playroom, complete with a slide, while adults can enjoy the residents’ lounge and game room.

The building’s strategic partnership with 92NY and exclusive access to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Guggenheim Museum further enhances the living experience for residents.
