Since its inception, Roger Dubuis has been tied intricately to the chronograph, the sophisticated watch complication that measures intervals of time. The calibre RD780 propels this new creation, putting Roger Dubuis at the apex of chronograph construction. Featuring an integrated, rather than modular, design, the chronograph complication is integral to the movement. This highly technical approach leads to a timepiece that seamlessly tells and measures time, and although the creation process is much more demanding, it offers an expanded canvas for creativity and craftsmanship, enabling every detail to be elevated to the next level.

At 6 o’clock, the column wheel, a renowned sign of technical value, is prominently featured. This intricate component, not only precisely crafted by Roger Dubuis, but is also visible from the front, adding to the watch’s charm while ensuring smoother pusher operation. Other notable features include the vertical clutch, which is more accurate when starting the chronograph, and an innovative Second Braking System (SBS), which enhances stability.

The calibre also features an unexpected 120° Rotating Minute Counter (RMC) at 3 o’clock, displaying an unorthodox yet joyful way of reading time. With a power reserve of 72 hours, it also counters the challenges of shock, gravity, and magnetism, featuring a 12° tilted balance wheel at 9 o’clock and a diamond-coated silicon escapement wheel, ensuring superior anti-magnetic qualities. To top it off, the RD780 carries the Poinçon de Genève certification, marking it as a true example of haute horologie.

In terms of exterior design, the 45 mm case is crafted in lightweight carbon and is paired with a ceramic bezel, creating a design that is as impressive as the calibre it houses. This ensemble pays tribute to supercar construction, especially when viewed from the back, where the rotor has been shaped like the rims of a supercar’s wheel. The Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph comes with a notched black rubber strap for added volume, and its inner layer displays a pattern reminiscent of tyre marks.
