Patek Philippe Grand Complication Alarm Travel Time

This model, known for its distinctive design including four notable pushers and a "two-tone" effect, combines aesthetic elegance with functional complexity. Share

The Patek Philippe Alarm Travel Time 5520RG has recently introduced an elegant rose gold version with a warm grey dial, marking a shift from its previous platinum and black dial models. This change has been received positively, offering a gentler aesthetic. The watch itself is largely crafted in rose gold and maintains a sleek profile with a diameter of 42.2mm and a thickness of 11.6mm, despite its numerous functions within a self-winding movement. It also features a water resistance of 30 meters, distinguishing it as the only chiming watch in Patek Philippe’s collection with this capability.

The design includes four distinct pushers, which are notable for their unique appearance, adding a polarizing element to the watch’s style. These pushers are enhanced with white gold tubes, contributing to the watch’s “two-tone” effect as described by the brand. The model offers a sapphire crystal case back with an optional solid gold back, both of which are included with the watch. The Alarm Travel Time is noted for its comfort on the wrist, thanks to its relatively slim profile. The crown and pushers are positioned in a way that they do not press uncomfortably against the wrist, making the watch comfortable to wear.

The dial of the 5520RG is particularly striking, featuring a sunburst finish with a charcoal grey minutes track and a matching date ring at the sub-dial at 6 o’clock. The numerals and the main time hands are accented in a similar charcoal hue, with luminescence added to enhance visibility. The dial layout includes enlarged minute markings and adjusted positions for the numerals, due to the proximity to the bell-shaped alarm indicator and the date sub-dial.

The watch’s functionality is robust yet user-friendly. It features an alarm set via a crown at 4 o’clock, which also winds the alarm mechanism or the movement depending on the direction turned. The alarm time can be set in 15-minute increments and the local time can be adjusted through pushers that alter the time by one-hour increments. This feature is particularly useful for travellers adjusting to new time zones. The day/night indicators help prevent confusion during these settings.

The alarm mechanism itself is precise, with a classic gong that sounds for approximately 35 seconds and can be stopped manually or allowed to run its course. The transition of the alarm from active to off is indicated on the dial, ensuring clarity for the user.

Internally, the 5520RG operates on the AL 30-660 S C FUS caliber, known for its superior finishing and precision, maintaining an accuracy of -3 to +2 seconds per day, with a power reserve of 42 to 52 hours. The watch’s mechanics continue to meet the high standards set by its predecessors.

The new iteration is completed with a chestnut calfskin strap with a rose gold clevis prong buckle, adding to the overall elegance of the design. Priced at CHF 219,000 the watch reflects its status as a “Grand Complication” piece. Initially introduced as a controversial and divisive model, the 5520 has evolved into a sought-after collector’s item, potentially paving the way to becoming a notable and influential design in the luxury watch market.
