As unique and breathtaking as the elusive phenomenon of a rainbow, the new Hastroid Rainbow emerges from HYT as an exclusive creation. The complex and fascinating dial of this watch, created through a modern artisanal technique known as Techno Art, represents an entirely new challenge that merges exceptional craftsmanship with a vision of the future of Haute Horlogerie.
The Rainbow collection by HYT measures the passage of time in a dazzling display of colours. For the Hastroid Rainbow, HYT took an on-trend look and gave it a high-tech spin, incorporating the full spectrum of rainbow colours in the watch’s display. This contemporary independent Swiss fine watchmaking brand has indeed revolutionized the very essence of displaying time.
What makes this timepiece truly remarkable is its focus on the outer edge of the dial and the heart of the exclusive fluid module with its retrograde hours display. The colouring serves dual functions: a stunning decorative effect and a technical aspect that enhances the legibility of the display.
There will be 15 Hastroid Rainbow timepieces, each unique and exclusive. These timepieces are the result of meticulous handwork by artisans possessing exceptional skills in an art technique requiring unparalleled dexterity. The use of laser cutting and tinted Zapon lacquer, a premium single-component lacquer that offers long-term protection, adds to the precision and beauty of the timepiece. The application of this lacquer via a pressurized process demands great skill, resulting in a dial that is individually crafted by Yan Patriarca, a lacquering expert at MD’Art SA.
The fluid in the capillary tube is black and as it moves around the coloured dial, it gives the impression of being tinted in the shade corresponding to each time slot. This effect is constantly changing, providing a modern poetic reminder of the transient nature of rainbows.
The minute track with its graduated scale follows the progress of the fluidic retrograde hours indicator and is coloured in a bright shade of violet. The dial’s legibility is further enhanced by a large central hand coloured violet to match perfectly, and two flight instrument-inspired sub-dials displaying small seconds and power reserve. Coated in Lumicast, these hands are black and red for improved readability. Lumicast coating on the relief hour numerals enables them to continue their rainbow magic in the dark, creating a phenomenon not possible in nature.
The Rainbow grille required a white base varnish to achieve the necessary brightness, followed by the spraying of pure dyes by hand in very thin layers, each no more than 2 to 3 microns thick. This delicate process exemplifies the mastery of colouring involved in this watch’s creation. Made from multi-layer carbon fibre with mat black DLC-coated titanium, the Hastroid’s case measures 48 mm in diameter, 52.3 mm in length, and is 17.20 mm thick. The remarkable construction achieved by superimposing adjusted and assembled elements is a feat of precision. Waterproof to 30 meters, the central titanium case protects the mechanical movement.
To let the dial reveal its sophistication, the centerpiece of the mecafluid system with its two central “bellows” reservoirs is intentionally darkened, featuring a special black treatment accentuated by satin-finished and sand-blasted finishes. The fluid in the borosilicate capillary tube indicates the retrograde hours, while a purple-tinted central hand coated with Lumicast points to the minutes.
The hand-wound mechanical movement 501-CM (with 41 jewels), beating at 28,800 vib/hour (4 Hertz), offers a 72-hour power reserve. This robust movement is the heart and soul of the timepiece, ensuring the precision required for such an exceptional creation.
