Emmy Awards recognize excellence in the American television industry, and is the equivalent of an Academy Award (for film). Because Emmys are given in various sectors of the American television industry, they are presented in different annual ceremonies held throughout the year. Primetime Emmy Awards are considered to be the most popular ceremony in the Emmys calendar.
The first Emmy ceremony took place on January 25, 1949, at the Hollywood Athletic Club, but solely to honor shows produced and aired locally in the Los Angeles area. The term "Emmy" is a French alteration of the television crew slang term "Immy", the nickname for an "image orthicon", a camera tube once used in TV cameras.
